Hunting truffles is a fine art, only mastered by well trained pigs and (in the case of truffles in Red Hill) a well trained super sniffer dog. Meeting ‘Thomas’ the truffle hunter in question is a bit of a trick as you are not allowed to distract him while he is working. This means not making eye contact with him or patting him while he is ‘working’, and this is quite a feat as he is very handsome. But its all part of the charm and ritual that comes with finding truffles. Luckily Danielle Paganoni of MP Experience is on hand to talk you through the finer points of truffle hunting etiquette. Going on a truffle hunt with Danielle is not the only truffle-y option available over winter – there are truffle weekend immersiosn at Georgie Bass Café and Cookery, or great truffle inspired dinners at FlindersHotel, or at Max’s at Red Hill Estate.
Truffles have long been known to have somewhat intoxicating effects on those that come into contact with them. Just ask Linda Crittenden of Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate - she once went on a truffle hunt and came back with a fiancée! You’ve been warned.
