One of the benefits of the new season is all the wonderful produce that becomes available.  Spring brings so many wonderful flavours and bright colours at our farm gates and, let’s face it, getting outdoors and choosing from the amazingly fresh produce that has been picked for you, is just what the season has ordered!

The very best way to sample the best of the best is to get-in-quick for your own newly released tickets to the inaugural ‘3 Farmers and a Chef’ food event taking place on November 11 amongst the aging barrels of Crittenden Estate's private barrel room. Three of the region's best farmers have joined forces with the award-winning Chef Michael Cole from Flinders Hotel, to take you on a tantalising food and wine journey across a degustation lunch. The beautiful Mornington Peninsula region has recently taken out the title of ‘Australia’s most delicious region’, so if you can’t wait for the event to get your fresh produce fix, then now’s the time to stock up on the abundance of deliciousness that this season has to offer; potatoes, asparagus, leafy greens, beetroot, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, fennel and leeks. Remember that these are seasonal businesses so make sure you phone ahead to confirm opening times! Here are some of our favourite places to get fresh local Spring produce:

Benton Rise Farm is a place where families can bring the kids out for the day, feed the animals and walk around the veggie patch. This little piece of paradise has been meticulously created from overgrown paddocks into a glorious unique farm gate experience. The centrepiece is the 100-year-old ‘Red Rattler’ train carriage that is used as the shop front for their own produce as well as produce from other local growers. All produce is picked fresh on the Friday in preparation for the busy weekend (open on Saturday and Sunday only) . Check out the new season artichoke and asparagus.

The Hawkes Family have been farming vegetables for 6 generations, and the Hawkes Farm Gate store has evolved from a few bags of spuds in a shed with an honesty box, to a staffed shop selling Hawkes potatoes alongside a great variety of other fresh vegetables from local growers. The farm also has small vegetable patch for the kids to scratch around in, with a beautiful old Farmall tractor – great for photos of your trip to the farm!

Torello Farm in Dromana grow all sorts of produce including heirloom vegetables, specialty potatoes and tree ripened fruit which they harvest daily and sell from their farm gate shop, along with beef and lamb they raise at their property in Tuerong.  The Farm gate shop is filled with goods sourced from nearby farms alongside homemade pickles and preserves (like beetroot relish, bread and butter pickles and preserved lemons), as well as a tasty variety of take home meals. Think lasagnes, Thai curries, meatballs and dumplings.

And to ward off the spring colds and fevers, visit Pure Peninsula Honey for all pure raw honey products or gifts visit the farm shop you can even book a free family farm talk and walk through a mock apiary. Now that’s an interesting adventure.

Or pop into Tully’s Corner Produce Store for market fresh fruit and veg, a continental deli, buy some beautiful meat from the gourmet butcher and while you are there grab some fresh flowers to brighten your day, also stop and have a ‘Hydrate it’ juice or a ‘pick me up tonic’ from the juice bar.
