You can prop on a beach anywhere along the Port Phillip or Western Port coastline – just take your rubbish with you – but here are a few other options:
Coolart Homestead and Wetlands, Somers
Here you’ll find a unique mix of wetlands (home to around 3000 birds), a historical homestead and recreational areas making it a top picnic choice for people of all ages. With the statuesque 1895 homestead as your backdrop, the surrounding are edged with picturesque garden borders, plus there are free electric BBQ’s and picnic tables. You’ll also find free parking, toilets, and some great walking tracks.
Seawinds Gardens, Arthurs Seat
Just a short stroll from Arthurs Seat Summit is Seawinds Gardens, or drive right on in via Purves Rd (parking is free). Enjoy the indigenous and exotic formal gardens in the area, plus wander around William Ricketts sculptures. The views over Port Phillip are some of the best on the peninsula, and you can spot the big ships as they traverse the bay. The facilities have disabled access and include a picnic shelter with electric BBQ’s, quite a number of picnic tables, toilets and walking tracks with views. Oh, and often the grey kangaroos come in at dusk.
Sorrento Historic Park, Sorrento
If you are looking for breathtaking views over the Port Phillip coastline, grassy hills to roll down or lay your blanket on, then this is the place for you. Sorrento Park features a wooden adventure playground, BBQs, tables (shaded and unshaded) and toilets. Plus you have that view for your after-picnic stroll.
Schnapper Point, Mornington
The large shady trees and outlook make this an obvious choice for a family picnic in Mornington. Conveniently located at the end of Main St, Schnapper Point makes for a short walk to scout out an ice-cream treat at the end of a great day. Facilities include playground, BBQs, tables, drinking water and toilets. Car parking is free but can be busy.
Picnics are meant to be easy
So here are a couple of options to make it special AND relaxed to organise:
Spoil yourself by picnicking in a scenic vineyard at Polperro Winery. Before settling into the vineyard enjoy a wine tasting in the cellar door and take the opportunity to select wines to compliment your picnic. Enjoy the blend of European and Asian flavours found on their rustic menu – there’s three delicious courses to make sure your whole afternoon is sorted. Hampers are prepared to-order daily and come complete with all the glassware, cutlery and crockery you need for a stylish picnic.
Blue Mini Café
Pick up your picnic pack to go from Blue Mini Café in Rosebud. They cater for individuals up to large groups and take the hassle out of feeding your crew. Also included is their top short walks list – to make sure you can have your cake and eat it too. Go one step further and let them provide theming for your special occasion to make it truly memorable.
