Melbournes Mornington Peninsula

Planning your Mornington Peninsula trip

Typical Itinery

While it's packed with attractions from coast to coast, the Mornington Peninsula is a compact destination that's very easy to explore. You could drive from 'top to toe' of this boot-shaped region in less than an hour – but you'd miss a great deal of the Peninsula if you did.

In fact, one of the most appealing things about the Peninsula is the ease of travelling the length of our bay and ocean coastlines, and meandering back and forth from one coast to another along country roads.

Here's how our website can help you plan your travels:

Colour-coded regions

The Mornington Peninsula is divided into five sub-regions:
Frankston & Surrounds Frankston and Surrounds
Northern Peninsula Meander Northern Peninsula Meander
Western Port Bay & Ocean Adventure Western Port Bay and Ocean Adventure
Peninsula Hinterland Peninsula Hinterland Experience
Southern Peninsula Escape Southern Peninsula Escape

You'll note that each has a colour code, which is also used by tour and accommodation operators in the sub-region. These operators have very handy little 'SwapCards' (you'll see them in display racks throughout the Peninsula) which you can collect as you travel. You can use these cards to ensure you see everything in one region before moving on to the next.

Touring Themes

If you have a special interest such as golf, gardens or food and wine, our touring themes are an excellent guide. There are six themes, each with a distinctive icon, plus icons for our accommodation and touring operators:

Culture, Art & Heritage Culture, Art and Heritage
Food & Wine Wine and Food
Adventure Untapped Adventure
Parks & Gardens Gardens

Golf Golf
Accommodation Accommodation
Wildlife Wander Wildlife
Transport & Touring Transport and Touring

Our Activities and Attractions pages give you lots of detail on each theme, including the operators you can visit.

Tours and Trails

Most people who come to the Peninsula want to do a number of things, play a round of golf, have a lazy lunch then visit a winery. Or indulge in their love of all things beautiful, including gardens, art and culture.

Go to our tours and trails pages, and you'll find we've already done this planning for you. We have seven trails that bring our themes together in a number of combinations, along with suggestions for touring the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island, or the Mornington Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road.
