Five touring regions, five different holiday experiences
Very few regions in Australia can tempt you with as many distinctive experiences as the
Mornington Peninsula. While our three coastlines are just a short distance apart, each has
its individual holiday atmosphere and special attractions.
The coastline along Port Phillip Bay has lots of busy seaside villages, plenty of water
sports and adventures. The Western Port Bay coastline has a more leisurely, laid-back
lifestyle, with secluded bays tucked into its coastline. The Bass Strait coastline is known
for its wild, windswept beaches with plenty of space for solitary strolls.
In between these coastlines is our rich green hinterland, with its wineries, art galleries,
restaurants, grand gardens, olive groves and elegant country retreats.
So to help you plan your holiday, the Mornington Peninsula is divided into five distinct regions:
Frankston & Surrounds

The closest region to Melbourne, Frankston is also just an hour's drive from the fairy penguins
of Phillip Island and Puffing Billy in the Dandenong Ranges. But don't rush off too quickly!
Frankston has plenty of coastal and country activities, including so many cultural attractions
that the city has a 17km self-drive cultural route.

Northern Peninsula Meander

An appealing mix of coastline and countryside, the Northern Peninsula is home to the noted
wineries of Moorooduc, and to the villages of Mount Eliza, Mornington and Mount Martha. You can
just meander through this very pretty part of the Peninsula, or you can step up the pace with
golf courses, markets, galleries, gardens, cafes and restaurants.

Western Port Bay & Ocean Adventure

Western Port Bay is perfect for visitors who seek solitude and little villages offering a slower
pace of life. Then again, it's also perfect for people who want to taste their way around the
wineries between Hastings and Merricks, and for wildlife lovers who hop on ferries to visit the
koalas on French Island and the fairy penguins on Phillip Island.

Peninsula Hinterland

This region is becoming very reminiscent of Europe, with its many wineries, restaurants, cafes,
country retreats, olive groves, galleries, gardens and farm gates. The area around Red Hill and
Main Ridge has a particularly strong food and wine community where visitors have been known to
arrive in the morning, stay for lunch, stay for dinner then decide to stay the night.

Southern Peninsula Escape

The villages of Portsea and Sorrento epitomise the Peninsula's seaside sophistication, with their
cliff-top mansions, cafes, restaurants, B&Bs, beachside hotels and galleries. You get all the
style of the Mediterranean, but without the price tag. There's a choice of excellent coastal and
country golf courses, and for invigorating walks it's hard to beat the famous 'back beaches' and
Point Nepean right at the tip of the Peninsula.
