Yay, cherry season is open!

Summer means the start of cherry season and the hills of Red Hill and Main Ridge are definitely the place to be. Pick your own deliciousness or grab some already picked, but you have to be quick because they are only in season for a short time!

There is really nothing like fruit that is tree ripened and direct from the farm, and the rich red soils of the Mornington Peninsula’s hinterland has a bunch of much-loved orchardists who grow these sweet and succulent, fruity treats. Here are three of our favourites where you can pick your own, or buy them already picked!

Ripe ‘n’ Ready Cherry Farm:

A visit to this farm (right next door to the Red Hill Market site) gives you a chance to meet Simon the cherry farmer and a choice to pick your own cherries in the orchard, or buy ready picked cherries, free range eggs, honey (and later in the season) raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries, marionberries and blackberries from the farmgate stall. Try the delicious fruit ice-cream – made with real berries and cherries. You can even book yourself in for some rainbow trout fishing in the dam – fun for the whole family.

Red Hill Cherry Farm:

Celebrating 50 years of all things ‘cherry’ this year – and what cherries they are – the Holmes family sure know cherries. You can ‘Pick Your Own’,  or try their very special cherry sorbet (gluten and dairy-free), cherry cordial, cherry jam and even their sweet, light and fruity cherry cider (Best In Class at the Red Hill Show)! Or grab a bottle of their award-winning cherry dessert wine (it’s like port) to try. They also grow sour Morello cherries (they come into season a little later) that can be used to cook up eastern European inspired jams, tarts and vinegars.

Mock Orchards:

Although their focus is traditionally apples (and cider), this fifth-generation certified Demeter Bio-dynamic orchard also grows delicious sweet cherries. Here you can buy a ready-picked package to take home. It’s guaranteed to be utterly fresh and delicious. You’ll also find delights such as apple juice, apple cider vinegar and freeze-dried fruits, plus there is a cider lounge or a pretty pergola area to kick back in and spend some time with friends. Mock Orchards extend their opening hours over summer so they are open 7 days from December 1.

Top Tip: Cherries are seasonal, and supply fluctuates according to demand, so it may not be available all the time. To avoid a wasted trip, check websites, social media or even give them a call to check availability prior to your visit.
