How To Picnic Like A Local

There’s no doubting the power of outdoor dining in the summer months.

There’s no doubting the power of outdoor dining in the summer months. The Cascades of sun rays glistening through verdant foliage, a warm and inviting selection of gourmet delights spread carefreely on a picnic rug or table, and the surrounding hum of chitter-chatter from loved ones; it’s truly unbeatable…at least we think so.

Along the Mornington Peninsula, our picnic adventures are becoming increasingly popular by the day. From Portsea to Red Hill and beyond, the overnight stayers, day-trip adventurers and all those who decide to unwrap this coastal paradise are welcomed to an extensive selection of experiences to enjoy.

As a long-standing Australian tradition, the picnic pursuit has become one of the most simplistic yet rewarding ways to bring people together to share a delectable feast. But that’s not only why we love it. Family-friendly or romantically trendy, this humble practice finds its presence in countless day-to-day moments; something suited to all occasions and celebrations.

Somewhere Special

Green Olive at Red Hill

Take a stroll near the vines at Green Olive at Red Hill, before grazing away at a deliciously crafted picnic hamper, complete with cheesy, fruity and nutty treats. With cutlery, glasses and the rug provided, the only decision you have to make here is whether you enjoy your picnic in the picturesque olive grove, in the paddock or by the dam watching the ducks.

Montalto

Carefully curated with a signature wine tasting to begin, a picnic at Montalto is nothing short of superb. Enjoy a secluded location to feast with those around you; seasonal, estate-grown and local produce at the forefront of the menu. And to make things even more heavenly, each picnic table is set with a white linen tablecloth along with plush cushions and a blanket on standby (if the temperature decides to drop!)

Arthurs Seat Eagle

Scenic and scrumptious, a picnic package at Arthurs Seat Eagle is a true winner for all family groups this summertime. With an included return flight on the much-loved eagle gondola (to be enjoyed pre, post or in the middle of the picnic), this experience takes the concept of outdoor dining to new heights…quite literally.

Take-Away Triumphs

Blue Mini

Brimming with both sweet and savoury sensations, a carefully curated take-home box from the Blue Mini emporium tastes as glorious as it looks. Maybe it’ll be the cheese and smoked salmon from the Peninsula Ploughman’s Picnic Pack to tickle your fancy? Or rather the sandwich points and scones from the classic (and much-adored) High Tea Pack that wins the taste buds' temptation? We’ll leave the decision up to you…

Le Capucin

At this quaint blue-painted cafe corner, there is something delicious to be found for all who visit. Only footsteps away from Portsea Front Beach, Le Capucin brings the best of France to you, offering premium coffee as well as gourmet croissants, sandwiches and salads. Picnic sorted? We think yes.

The DIY Journey

Looking to put together your own specialty picnic hamper? Pay a visit to one of our leading farmgates around the Mornington Peninsula to browse an unrivalled selection of fresh and local produce. Red Hill Cellar & Pantry is wonderful for cheese, salumi and their selection of wine, beer, cider and spirits whilst at Torello Farm, it’s their heirloom vegetables, tree-ripened fruit and heritage-baked bread to keep an eye out for.

Facilities to accommodate self-organised picnics are plentiful throughout our region, as well as neighbouring playgrounds to keep the young ones (and those young at heart) entertained. Coastal and hinterland vistas provide an unmatched elevation to the dining experience, with some of the best views in the region on offer between the multiple gardens and parklands to picnic at. Take a closer look here.

So however you decide to make the most of the great outdoors this summertime, the addition of a picnic with family and friends could be one of the best decisions of all. And don’t worry, there is plenty of space to go around…
