2020 marks the 31st year since Golf Australia Magazine first published their rankings of the country’s best golf courses. Over this time, a lot has changed in the golfing landscape and the team believe it is worth celebrating. Proudly, several Mornington Peninsula courses hold a healthy ranking in the line-up.
Coming in at the impressive position of #5 in the nation’s finest 100 layouts in the land is Peninsula Kingswood Country Club – North Course located in Frankston. Judge Matt Mollica commented; “One of the best parcels of land for golf on the Sandbelt is now home to a course of rare quality. Exceptional green complexes, and gorgeous bunkering are complimented by pure putting surfaces. Hole after hole of engaging design, fun and challenge. The course catapults into the Top 10 in the country, sitting comfortably alongside our most revered classic layouts.”
Our friends at St Andrews Beach Golf Course, Fingal took out the noteworthy ranking of #12, Judge Andrew Anderson sharing; “Alluring from beginning to end, St Andrews Beach offers some of the best value golf in the country.”
Portsea Golf Club ranked #34 amongst the nation’s best, Judge Brendan James observing “Portsea has been an integral part of any visiting golfer’s itinerary for decades. It’s fun, challenging and beautifully presented. Its rise in the ranking this year is well-deserved.”
At Moonah Links Golf Resort – on the Legends Course, they know what they are doing, at #45 Judge DJ Loypur remarking “What was intended to be the secondary course has, in my opinion, ended up being the better of the two courses at Moonah Links. A course you will never tire of playing because it is simply just a fun course, that doesn’t beat you up, but remains interesting and tactical.”
Coming in at 88, RACV Cape Schanck Resort has received steady and consistent improvement during the past seven years and now sees its debut into the top-100 courses in the country. Judge Jacqui Lee states, “I could never tire of playing this course. There is enough funky stuff on the back nine to put a smile on your face.” Judge Joe Thomas adding, “The design has always offered excitement and these days this goes hand-in-hand with very good playing surfaces.”
Whether you are an avid golfer committed to your favourite green or a curious beginner hoping to find your way, Mornington Peninsula is home to an impressive collection of destination courses, congratulations to the courses who now have the rankings to commend it.
