People’s Choice Award winner announced

The team at Montalto are proud to be offering a big congratulations to artist Clancy Warner for her piece "Between the Silence and the Heartbeat", which comprehensively won the People's Choice award for the 2019 Montalto Sculpture Prize and receives prize money of $1,000.

Artists statement:

"''Between The Silence and the Heartbeat' is about the indifference to Indigenous deaths within “white” Australia; whether it is in police custody, suicide, the gap in health care or being deliberately targeted. The senseless deaths must stop. Indigenous Australians have been here 60,000+ years; giving up and lying down is not an option. The heartbeat keeps beating… it’s time for us all to stand up!"

Pictured left, 'Between the Silence and the Heartbeat' is created from re-claimed Oregon timber (burnt), awlwood (varnish) and steel, and measures 185 x 450 x 200 cm

Clancy's sculputre was an entrant into 2019 The Montalto Sculpture Prize exhibition. It is an annual $40,000 acquisitive prize, open to artists working in any medium.

Pictured above, the overall Montalto Scultpure Prize 2019 winner ‘Moonah’, by artist Kylie Stillman, is a free-standing stack of hand-cut fence paling panels, an imposing work that continues the artist’s use of working with everyday materials and follows her use of books and papers, to form the objects into which she carves.

You can see the permanent collection on exhibition at Montalto, 33 Shoreham Rd, Red Hill South, 3937.

Entries open for 2020:

Entries for the following year open at the beginning of September and close at the end of October, so this means that entry is now open for The 2020 Montalto Sculpture Prize - their 18th annual Exhibition and Prize! It will be a $40,000 Acquisitive Sculpture Prize – among the most valuable private sculpture prizes in Australia. The winning piece becomes part of the stunning Sculpture Trail permanent exhibition.
