In winter the days are shorter and can be a bit chilly, but it's actually a great time to step it up and keep fit on a brisk walk. With the number of local national parks and reserves on the Mornington Peninsula there are plenty of options for a short walk. Why not try:

Waterfall Gully, Main Ridge:

Chances are in winter this intermittent and, let’s face it usually tiny, waterfall just south of Arthurs Seat will be in full flight. Coming down the hill the path winds through a stand of lovely she-oaks with needles thick on the ground, and as you round the corner the sound of the waterfall echoes across the gully – adding to the anticipation.

Sweetwater Creek, Frankston:

A wooden boardwalk that meanders alongside this bubbling creek at the base of Olivers Hill in Frankston. Home to more than 50 species of birds, 11 species of orchids, 5 different species of frogs and even the tiny Galaxius fish that spends its youth in the ocean and then travels back upstream to breed.

Endeavour Fern Gully, Red Hill:

This special place is a 28 hectare National Trust property that encompasses the headwaters of Stony Creek and features an un-spoilt fern gully and huge eucalypt trees. It’s one of the rare surviving remnants of this type of indigenous bushland found on the Mornington Peninsula.

The Briars Wetland Walk, Mount Martha:

This hidden walk in this small animal sanctuary starts behind the visitor centre and leads to a couple of large observation bird hides overlooking the wetlands where ducks and native birds abound. You can explore further if you like.

OT Dam, Arthurs Seat:

This tranquil bushland 3km circuit walk in the Arthurs Seat State Park takes you to the old OT dam – originally constructed by horse drawn scoops for the OT Cordial company in Dromana.
