ANIMALIA In Sand

14th December - 30th April
14 December 2019, 10:00 AM to 30 April 2020, 6:00 PM

Sand Sculpting Australia and Boneo Discovery Park presents ANIMALIA IN SAND the world's first Sand Sculpting Exhibition with augmented reality technology.

Animalia in Sand brings to life the much-loved classic children's book by Graeme Base through 26 giant sand sculptures created by some of the world's most renowned sand sculptors. See the sculptures come alive through our innovative sand and screen immersive experience.

A magical outdoor space to discover art, nature and play, Boneo Discovery Park's new exhibit will appeal to families and visitors of all ages.

Graeme Base created the alliterative animal alphabet which has become a family favourite for over 30 years. Animalia features incredibly detailed and creative descriptions and whimsies of wildlife from all corners of the globe, alongside hidden images for readers to discover. Over 3,500 tonnes of sand has been transformed into all our favourite Animalia characters; from Ingenious Iguanas to Vaudeville Ventriloquist Vultures. Fifteen award-winning sculptors from around the globe have worked for over 450 hours collectively to bring the exhibition to life along the wetlands and lush garden pathways.

The exhibition will be complemented by an augmented reality app with each of the 26 sculptures having an augmented reality sign that brings the characters to life. While the pages of the Animalia book feature lavish illustrations containing intricate details and moral messages, the sand sculpting exhibition will be just as immersive, revealing hidden stories through this on-screen app experience.

The sand sculpting area will also feature sand art tables, workshops with sand sculpting sand and a mini diggers play pit. There's also pedal boats, a snack bar kiosk and plenty of shady, grassy picnic spots for visitors to enjoy.
