A destination for wine with a modern vineyard restaurant showcasing the best of the region's produce, Crittenden Estate is a local favourite on the Peninsula. Known as ground breakers in their winemaking approach – the past decade has seen them embrace new ways of looking after their soil in a quest for better expression of colour and flavour in their wines. Crittenden Estate shared; ‘Our focus on soil health is getting noticed all around the world - and now at home too. We started a project nearly a decade ago to manage our vineyard differently - abandoning chemicals, introducing a program of inter-row cover crops of peas and oats, a composting regime and using recycled water to nurture our land, we are proud to be nominated by The Weekly Times as a finalist in the Australian Farmer of the Year Awards. As a family business we are mindful of our future generations. We anticipate that the actions we take today will in turn create a more sustainable platform for our vines to continue to provide us with the fruit that we, and perhaps our children, can turn into exemplary wine for years to come.’
Another family run business long known for their history in innovation and sustainable production is Mock Red Hill. Since 1895, five generations of family have continued to grow apples in the picturesque hinterland of Red Hill, Victoria. Today the family continues to nurture and nourish the same certified orchard, creating a unique range of bio-dynamic products. Fifth generation Mock sisters - Sheryn, Mardi-Claire & Demeter have created an interactive tourism experience on the farm welcoming the public to visit their Farmgate, Coffee Shop and Cider Tasting Lounge to indulge in their tasty beverage range, including their craft apple ciders and sparkling juices, fresh Demeter Bio-Dynamic certified produce freeze dry fruit snacks.

Their free-range animals are grown completely on organic principles; farm breeds ethically farmed, rare breed Wessex Saddleback Pork, Black Faced Suffolk Lamb & Belted Galloway Beef. They work sustainably in order to lower their carbon footprint; ‘We believe in providing the best lives for our stock, allowing them to express their animalities and live in natural conditions as they were meant to. We want to give our visitors a true paddock to plate experience, something that inspires confidence and delivers quality and flavour for them to take home to their families to share’.
The dynamic team behind Polperro Winery and Many Little Bar and Bistro told us ‘We've worked incredibly hard on over the past 18 months building the organic and biodynamic certified Polperro produce farm. The farm has been the backbone of stunning delicious produce you have enjoyed in recent times on both the Polperro and Many Little Bar and Bistro menus.’ What began as a wine brand creating drinkable, balanced and elegant wines in 2006 has now turned into a new cellar door, a restaurant and a cosy place to stay in the best part of the world. ‘We have a focus on increased vineyard health, using a mix of organic and biodynamic principles practiced in all of our Mornington Peninsula vineyards - I reckon I have the best job in the world. It’s part agriculture, part science, and part marketing, with a good dose of creativity thrown in' explained founder Sam Coverdale.
While we all stay home and do our part, dreaming of your next holiday getaway – you can look forward to sipping, tasting and savouring the flavour of Mornington Peninsula produce, wines and innovative menus shaped by sustainable practice – you won’t be disappointed!
