A Centennial Celebration For Merricks General Wine Store

When it comes to businesses on the Mornington Peninsula, many have reached a notable milestone in their years of operation. Yet for Merricks General Wine Store, their century of service represents one of the region’s most inspiring achievements to date. This weekend, the much-loved and historically influential store will be celebrating 100 years from first opening its doors to the community. And what a beautiful tale it has been since 1922.

It started with a love story between founders Matilda (Tilly) Joyner and Albert Weston. And today, the Merricks-based store and adjoining California-style bungalow have much love to share with all who visit. While the site has undergone multiple changes in ownership alongside a significant renovation in the early 2000s, its ethos has remained consistent. As a place for everyone to come together and champion the local spirit.

Merricks General Wine Store is currently owned and operated by the Myer and Baillieu families. When stopping by, visitors can expect to indulge in a smorgasbord of superb Mornington Peninsula food, wine, produce and art. The on-site restaurant caters to breakfast and lunch sittings while the nearby cellar door has an array of fine wines to sample. Of course, a range of in-house-made and locally sourced goods can be picked up during the visit. The warming indoor fireplace and expansive outdoor area make it an ideal all-season location to enjoy.

Shaded by the charming and longstanding Kurrajong tree, the site houses many special memories. This Saturday 15th October, a range of festivities are planned to celebrate the significant milestone. Food trucks, workshops, music and more included. Most activities are free while some need a booking.

Additionally, a collation of historical content will be available to view in Merricks House. A step back in time that is as compelling as it is inspiring. This space currently serves as a vibrant art gallery, converted from the original 'Westgate' dwelling.
