Join us for Pigment & Practice — an immersive oil painting workshop facilitated by Australian artist Hannah Nowlan, designed to introduce or deepen your understanding of this expressive and time-honoured medium.

In this 3.5-hour session, you’ll explore the fundamentals of oil paint — from understanding pigments, colour mixing, and surfaces, to experimenting with traditional and contemporary techniques. Guided by Hannah’s intuitive and exploratory approach, this workshop encourages creative play while building foundational knowledge of materials and methods. You’ll work across a variety of surfaces and exercises to develop confidence in handling oil paint, mediums and brushes. With plenty of space for experimentation and personal expression. You will also learn Hannah’s artist-hacks for easy management of an oil painting practice and de-bunk some oil-painting myths that make this practice feel challenging.

You will take home your colour tests, painting studies on paper and natural linen, along with a detailed oil-painting document to refer back to.

Whether you’re new to oil or looking to try our low-toxic range of oil mediums and Melbourne-made oil paints, this class offers a welcoming space to begin an oil painting practice. Hannah’s works will be on display in the gallery stockroom to provide insight into her unique approach to oil painting. All materials provided, with an detailed information sheet to take home, a clean-primed linen board to create a finished study and many oil on paper experiments. Grazing platter and light refreshments included. All abilities welcome — no prior oil painting experience required.
