A Local Favourite, A National Champion.

Some of the best holiday discoveries happen when you turn away from the main street.

In Mornington, a visit to Watt Road leads to Tar Barrel Brewery & Distillery, where wood-fired pizzas, locally crafted drinks and a warm welcome come with a story worth sharing.

Now, there’s a national trophy in that story, too.

Tar Barrel’s Corner Pale has been named Champion Pale at the inaugural Beer Championships, bringing a proud win home to the Mornington Peninsula. The competition attracted 262 beers from 74 breweries across Australia, with Corner Pale taking the title from six finalists in its category.

For founder Matt Bebe and head brewer Andrew Gow, known as AG, the achievement reflects a brewing partnership built over more than a decade. Years of shared ideas, experience and care have gone into the beers they make together, and this familiar favourite now has national recognition.

 Founder: Matt Bebe

There’s something particularly lovely about the winning beer being part of Tar Barrel’s everyday line-up. Corner Pale belongs to its core range, making this a celebration that regulars can share in and visitors can discover for themselves.

Brewed with Citra and Amarillo hops, it brings melon and passionfruit notes to a smooth, balanced pale ale. Tar Barrel suggests pairing it with pizza, giving you a good starting point when settling in at the brewpub.

The name Tar Barrel has its own connection to the Peninsula. It takes inspiration from a local corner where road builders once stored their tar barrels, a small piece of regional history carried into the brewery’s identity. That connection to place continues through its commitment to supporting and sourcing from the Mornington Peninsula community.

At its Mornington home, the experience stretches beyond the winning pale. Explore core and specialty beers, order a tasting paddle to discover a few different styles, or try the distillery’s gin, whisky and vodka. Wood-fired pizzas and local wines round out the offering, while live music provides another reason to check what’s on before visiting.

For visitors, it’s an opportunity to get closer to the makers who give the Mornington Peninsula its flavour. For Matt, AG and the Tar Barrel team, it’s a moment to celebrate the work behind every batch and the community that has supported them along the way. Next time you’re exploring Mornington, take that turn onto Watt Road. There’s a local story, a pizza and a national champion waiting to be discovered.
